Taking Steps

Team Bike Doctor made use of the extended Columbus Day weekend and put riders on podiums for both days of racing at Psycho Cross in Sykesville, MD, and MABRA’s Hyattsville CX just outside of DC.

Todd Bickling got things started right at Psyho cross on Saturday, which was held at an abandoned mental hospital in Sykesville, MD. It was a very tough course, with two major run-ups, and was very technical. Todd had to make up some ground from his 5th row starting position, but worked his way through the group to lead the race by the 2nd lap. After fighting for the lead spots, he ended up hanging on for 3rd.

Sunday saw a return to the MABRA series in Hyattsville, MD for Route 1 Velo/Arrow’s hometown CX race. The course saw several improvements over the previous year with the addition of the technical and challenging “wooded” section. Pre-riding the course was a benefit, and deciding to ride or run portions of the “wooded” section could save some time, or as some found out, cost you big time!

Tanner Browne continued his top placing from the previous week with another 2nd place in the Jr.s 15-18 category, tightening his grasp on the series leader jersey, all while rocking out on his new BMC race bike. Seriously, most 15 year olds don’t have bikes this rad!

Next up, Todd Bickling and Steve Fife lined up for the Master’s ¾ race on the front of the starting grid. Chris King from Route 1 Velo went from the gun, and used his teammate Big Bill Schieken to create a gap that he held all the way to the finish. Fife put in a serious chase with a couple other riders tagging along, and got to within 10 seconds of King. After a tense battle with John Hicks from Sportif, Fife rolled across the line in 3rd after a great pass by Hicks just before the last turn onto the finishing straight. Bickling put in another solid result with 10th place on the day.

In the Master’s 1/2/3 race, Evan Ellicott and Jed “Jedi” Prentice mixed it up with the fast veterans. These two mountain bikers were enjoying the technical “wooded” section, and Ellicott placed 20th with Prentice slotting in right behind in 21st.

Two weeks until the MABRA series is headed to everyone’s favorite event, the DCCX. In the meantime, Team Bike Doctor will be training hard in the hopes that there are more podium steps in our future.

The team would like to thank its sponsors for their generous support, without whom we wouldn’t be able to promote and enjoy the sport that we love. Please check out their great products/services: Bike Doctor, Cannondale, Bell Helmets, Tifosi Optics.
