Bike Doctor visits the Steel City

5 05 2012

The Tour of Lititz was not the only race last weekend where the red and black flag was flown, with a portion of the squad heading up to the Steel City Showdown criterium in downtown Pittsburgh. A scenic race that spans two bridges, the event sees large crowds of spectators, closed roads, and an expo of cycling-related vendors. Did we mention the free beer? An event well worth leaving the DC area to travel to.

After a 5 minute truce, the race was a flurry of attacks for the first half. The field nearly split each lap with a number of riders shooting up the road only to be brought back and followed with immediate counter attacks.

The elastic finally snapped with 30 minutes to go, and Nicholas was able to make the escaping break. The group of 7 saw constant attacking as each took their turn trying to drop their breakmates, yet 6 riders survived until the finish. Nicholas was able to stick in for a strong finish, capturing fourth and a podium spot for Bike Doctor.
